Camelphat
Avant-garde UK Techno Dj duo
Dave Whelan and Mike Di Scala compose the dynamic duo known as CamelPhat formed in Liverpool. They found their genesis in the vibrant music scene of Liverpool, where they first met in the local 3 Beat Records shop. Both experienced DJs with their own nightclubs, their shared passion for music led to fruitful collaborations, starting as members of The Chosen Few. At the same time they managed the Adhesive record label, further honing their industry skills. Their early projects included releasing a cover of the Tears for Fears song "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", and remixing various tracks under several aliases such as The Bassline Hustlers, Men from Mars, and Da Mode.
Their exploration into music production saw the release of "Shot Away" under the alias Pawn Shop, which was based on a sample of "Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones. This successful venture was followed by several singles as Whelan & Di Scala, across various labels, including their own Bachelor Pad Recordings. This period also saw Dave Whelan showcasing his talent as a radio presenter on Juice FM from 2008 to 2014, further diversifying their involvement in the music industry.
In 2010, the name CamelPhat made its debut on the duo's label, Vice Records. The pair initially chose to conceal their identities behind wrestling masks to focus attention on their music. Alongside their music production, they also ventured into business, becoming owners of the Liverpool nightclub Mansion in 2011. As CamelPhat, they released numerous singles and EPs on various record labels, with several of their songs appearing on the Ultratop charts in Belgium.
Their breakthrough came with the 2017 collaboration with Elderbrook on "Cola", which peaked at No. 1 on the US Billboard Dance Club Songs chart and received a nomination for Best Dance Recording at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.
This pair's influence in the scene is undisputed, and for the last couple of years they have focused on leveraging it to go to different festivals and work with many of the great names in the industry. These few quiet years are a testament on how confortable Camelphat are with their succes, but as any big names, they can't be really far to a big change. What is to come? Well, that is the question.
